The Church is thrilled to welcome Michael Blake’s Chroma Nova 5, for an evening of paradoxical yet seamless jazz. With a sinuous blend of Brazilian rhythms and modern jazz, the quintet is said to “bring to mind palm trees growing out of frozen tundra.” Join us as Hamptons Jazz Fest returns to The Church with one more great concert.
In the span of four decades the New York City musical force known as Michael Blake has contributed an impressive body of work to contemporary jazz. This has led to widespread critical acclaim and an identifiable refined sound, that embraces sonic multidimensionality. Dance of the Mystic Bliss, the debut album of Chroma Nova 5, landed on The Guardian’s Album of the Month in June 2023.
Comprised of Michael Blake (tenor and soprano saxophone, flute), Sky Steele (Violin), Gili Lopes (Bassist), Guilherme Monteiro (Guitar), and Rogerio Boccato (Percussion), Michael Blake’s Chroma Nova 5 takes listeners on a boundary-breaking musical journey that showcases both composition and improvisation.
There will be a Social Hour from 5:30 - 6:30pm before the concert begins. All are welcome to join!

Bringing to mind palm trees growing out of the frozen tundra, Michael Blake's Chroma Nova creates a sinuous blend of Brazilian rhythms and modern jazz.
In a career spanning four decades, New York City based saxophonist Michael Blake has created a large body of recorded work in the field of contemporary jazz. As a leader he has over a dozen albums to his name, featuring the saxophonist's original compositions. He has toured internationally as a leader while supporting artists such as The Lounge Lizards, Ben Allison. Charlie Hunter and Steven Bernstein/Henry Butler and the Hot 9.
Chroma Nova’s debut album Dance of the Mystic Bliss features Blake's saxophones and flute immersed in a vibrant musical universe of his own design. It was selected by The Guardian music critic John Fordham as Album of the Month and #3 Best Jazz Album of the Year.
“Blake brings his boundary-breaking approach to new heights on 2023’s Dance of the Mystic Bliss. A harmonically shimmering and textural production that showcases his bold arranging and virtuosic improvisation skills. These are deeply interwoven productions, encompassing the listener in a kind of topographical map of sound."
