The Church in collaboration with the Sag Harbor Cinema will present a screening of the documentary  Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight. This screening has been programmed in tandem with The Church’s fall exhibition Yes, No, WOW: The Push Pin Studios Revolution. April Gornik, The Church co-founder and exhibition co-curator, will introduce the film. Following the film there will be an intriguing conversation between director Wendy Keys and Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan.

Milton Glaser is one of the six artists featured in the exhibition, as he was a founding member of Push Pin studios. In 1968 he founded the New York magazine with Clay Felker and is best known for designing the “I ♥ NY” logo in the 1970’s when New York City was at its most dangerous and nearly bankrupt. The simple yet ingenious design instantly became the center of a campaign to revive New York and “I ♥ NY”  has endured as one of the most recognizable icons in the world.

Glaser also designed the ubiquitous Dylan poster for CBS Records featuring a silhouette of Bob Dylan with psychedelic hair. He also designed logos for DC Comics, the World Health Organization, the Olympics, as well as memorable advertisements for products like Campari and Brooklyn Brewery. Even the Mad Men TV series tapped Glaser, who was already in his 80s, to design their final season poster.

Up until his death in 2020 on his 91st birthday, Glaser also used his extraordinary talent to create witty and elegant designs for public causes like voting, civil rights, anti-war movements, the women’s movement, homelessness, HIV/AIDS awareness, and anti-apartheid. Glaser was even working on a design to help bring together a fatigued and isolated New York during the apex of the Covid-19 pandemic when he sadly passed away.

Artfully directed by first-time filmmaker Wendy Keys, the film glances into everyday moments of Glaser’s personal life and captures his immense warmth, humanity, and the boundless depth of his intelligence and creativity.

  • Wendy was Executive Producer/ Programming of the Film Society of Lincoln Center until 2008. For over 30 years she was on the New York Film Festival selection committee, curated film programs at the Walter Reade Theater and produced and directed their annual gala tribute to a major film artist, among whom were Laurence Olivier, Federico Fellini, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Clint Eastwood, Mike Nichols and Meryl Streep. Tributes to John Huston and Billy Wilder were aired on PBS on Live from Lincoln Center. At the Walter Reade she directed many retrospectives of actors and directors and organized a variety of thematic series. Ms Keys produced and directed Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight and All Aboard, a film for the Friends of the High Line. She is a Director Emeritus of Human Rights Watch, and from 1969-2003 was a board member and film programmer for the International Design Conference in Aspen. She currently sits on the boards of Sag Harbor Cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
