Music and Art Bobby Sanabria and the Quarteto Ache

A concert for music lovers of all ages, The Church, in collaboration with the Reutershan Trust, was pleased to present Music and Art with Bobby Sanabria & the Quarteto Ache. Sanabria and his players used jazz music's history and methodology as a catalyst and inspiration for making visual art. The performance, part recital, part lecture, was a part of the Pierson Arts co-curricular educational program Music and Art, which introduces students to the world of jazz. The performance at The Church, which is central to the program, was interlaced with anecdotes about jazz, its history, and methodology. The audience was introduced to various forms of jazz and their relationship to numerous cultural influences, structures, and improvisations. We heard the facility, fluency, and creativity and noted the similarities and differences between music and art; and how jazz music has evolved. The participating Pierson students in attendance took visual notes and photographs and ultimately will create artworks inspired by the performance they witnessed; an exhibition of the student’s work will be presented in the spring of 2023. Concluding this outstanding (and informative) performance was a Q&A between the musicians and the audience.

Bobby Sanabria is an eight-time Grammy-nominated percussionist, composer, arranger, conductor, and educator. His 2018 Grammy-nominated recording, West Side Story Reimagined, won the prestigious 2019 Record of the Year from the Jazz Journalist Association. Mr. Sanabria presently teaches at The New School and New York University.
