Mercer Quintet returns to The Church! After a sold-out performance in February, popular demand has called the collaborative modern jazz ensemble to return to Sag Harbor for a summer evening concert of original compositions steeped in musicality, philosophy, and curiosity.

Comprised of Mercer Shavelson (Keyboard), Brandon Choi (Trumpet), Adam Cordero (Saxophone), Nick Panoutsos (Upright Bass), and Alex Yoo (Drums), the quintet takes listeners on a rhythmic journey that invigorates and inspires. Drawing from many influences including Hip-hop, Avant-garde Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, and Folk music from around the globe, Mercer Quintet invites audiences to enjoy newly developed pieces and contemplate the next generation of rising jazz stars.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

MERCER SHAVELSON

Composer, Keyboard

  • Mercer Shavelson is an up-and-coming Keyboardist/Composer based in Queens. Shavelson grew up in Sea Cliff, NY, a small town in Long Island, and has been around music all his life. This has led him to a flourishing music career, which so far has been characterized by unique explorations into instrumentation, groove, and harmony. The son of a jazz singer, Mercer attributes much of his musical inspiration to jazz icons such as Bill Evans and John Coltrane, though he has also been influenced by a wide array of different musical traditions and artists, ranging from the Armenian Folk-Infused music of Tigran Hamasyan to Hip-hop groups such as The Roots.

BRANDON CHOI

Trumpet

  • Brandon Choi is an improvising trumpet player. A recent transplant to New York City, he enjoys making music and sounds with the many kindred spirits he’s found there. Brandon draws on his rich experience as an in-demand freelancer all across Upstate and Western New York to contribute as a burgeoning trumpeter in the NYC music community, playing with such luminaries as Miguel Zenon, Ethan Iverson, and Ingrid Jensen. ITS Jazz Improvisation Competition 2019, WTS Jazz Competition – 1st place winner, Carmine Caruso Jazz Trumpet Competition 2021 Finalist.

ADAM CORDERO

Saxophone

  • New York native Adam Cordero is a saxophonist, clarinetist, bassoonist, composer, and educator, based in Queens, New York. His dedication to music has led him to play at the most established jazz venues in the NYC area such as The Jazz Gallery, Smalls Jazz Club, Roulette Intermedium, and Williamsburg Music Center. In 2022, Adam’s career as a bassoonist led him to collaborate with avant-garde jazz legend & Pulitzer Prize winner, Henry Threadgill for his multimedia project “The Other One” which was performed live at Roulette Intermedium and released as an album in 2023. Adam teaches his own studio of students privately and is an adjunct faculty member at The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music. As well as establishing a career as an artist & educator, Adam is invested in bringing the modern Jazz Community together – He is a leading founder of the music venue Julian’s NYC & the record label, Tidebloom Records.

NICK PANOUTSOS

BASS

  • Bassist Nick Panoutsos has become an increasingly prominent voice in the New York City jazz community since moving from the Sang Francisco Bay Area in 2016. HE has earned a reputation as a versatile collaborartor and leader on both upright and electric bass. His debut album, Monos, features solo bass arrangements of his own compositions and Greek Folk songs.

ALEX YOO

DRUMS

  • Alex Yoo is a drummer/percussionist from Queens, New York. He is a recent graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with renowned artists Billy Hart, Nasheet Waits, and Jason Moran. At the age of 23, Alex is an active member of NYC’s jazz and singer-songwriter circuit and has worked and performed alongside a variety of musicians including Michael Formanek, Marshall Gilkes, Fay Victor, Michael Mayo, and Dave Holland.
