Cancelled- THE POWER OF POETRY: Verse 4 - Go Forth and Multiply
Due to unforeseen circumstances, this event will not take place
“….When the dove returned to him in the evening,
there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf…”
The Ark is about to dock, and to celebrate our closing weekend, we invite our poetry-loving friends to the fourth installment of The Power Of Poetry, our community-driven poetry read-in. Gathering in the library, we will weave through a curated selection of poems that relate to The Ark as we explore man’s relationship to animals and nature and examine archetypal imagery of the flood, the raven, the dove, and the rainbow. Join us as we fill the gallery with the power of poetry— reading, listening, and reflecting on poetry in real-time.
As a reminder, the poems are curated in advance, and readers are assigned their reading order upon arrival. Poems are not pre-selected, rehearsed, or memorized but are actively engaged with as the reader steps up to the mic. Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing that this format helps both listeners and readers feel liberated from ego and fully immersed in the poem.

Film Screening of LOUISE BOURGEOIS: The Spider, The Mistress, and The Tangerine - in Collaboration with the Sag Harbor Cinema
The Church is thrilled to collaborate with the Sag Harbor Cinema for a special screening of Lousie Bourgeois: The Spider, The Mistress, and The Tangerine.
As a screen presence, Louise Bourgeois is magnetic, mercurial and emotionally raw. There is no separation between her life as an artist and the memories and emotions that affect her every day. Her process is on full display in this extraordinary documentary. As an artist, Louise Bourgeois has for six decades been at the forefront of successive new developments, but always on her own powerfully inventive and disquieting terms.
In 1982, at the age of 71, she became the first woman to be honored with a major retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In the decades since, she has created her most powerful and persuasive work that has been exhibited, studied and lectured on worldwide. Filmed with unparalleled access between 1993 and 2007, Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine is a comprehensive and dramatic documentary of creativity and revelation. It is an intimate, human and educational engagement with an artist’s world.

OPENING RECEPTION: The Ark - An Exhibition Curated by ERIC FISCHL
Step inside The Church on June 21st from 6 to 7:30 PM to witness its latest transformation as The Ark opens its doors for its first public viewing. The 2025 Summer exhibition curated by Eric Fischl, refers directly to the myth of the Deluge: an event of such apocalyptic scale, forewarned, unheeded, and unstoppable, that it appeared it would be the end of all life on earth. However, through human resourcefulness, will, and compassion, the Great Flood marked a new beginning, a do-over… a rebirth. Composed solely of animal sculptures by over 40 international artists of the last century, the exhibition looks closely at man’s relationship with animals, nature, and self.
Join us any time between 6 PM and 7:30 PM on Saturday, June 21st for the first glimpse of The Church like you’ve never seen it before! No tickets or RSVP’s are necessary for this special evening. The exhibition will be on view from Sunday, June 22 – Monday, September 1st during our exhibition hours, Thursday – Monday, 11 AM – 5 PM. THE POWER OF POETRY: Verse 3 - I’m with the Banned
Answer.
That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on,
and you may contribute a verse
-Walt Whitman
The Power of Poetry returns for the next verse! The Church is excited to invite you to join us for the third iteration of our poetry ‘read-in’ series Verse 3: I’m with the Banned, exploring poems and voices who have encountered resistance and censorship of expression. From Shakespeare to Shel Silverstein, poets throughout history have had their poems banned, restricted, censored, or challenged. What are the grounds for the limitations of expression? Let’s find out! Join us to give voice to poets Gwendolyn Brooks,Amanda Gorman, Shel Silverstein, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde and more.
This recurring program brings us together to celebrate poetry, the beauty of words, and the power of capturing the human experience through a community-driven poetry read-in. Each session features a curated selection of poems tied by a common theme. Readers are assigned a number upon arrival and read in order. Poems are not pre-selected, rehearsed, or memorized but are actively engaged with as the reader steps up to the mic. Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing that this format helps both listeners and readers feel liberated from ego and fully immersed in the poem.
We invite you to read, listen, and think about poetry in real-time in our main gallery space and join the community discussion following the read-in.

Cecily Broderick of Christ Episcopal Church; the Celebrating Creatives of Color Committee (Beverly Granger, Gwendolyn Hankin, Victoria Pinderhughes, Paula Taylor, and Olivia White); Edwina von Gal (Planned Parenthood/ChangeHamptons.org/Perfect Earth Project); Myrna Davis and April Gornik, curators of Yes, No & Wow: The Push Pin Studios Revolution; Guild Hall’s leadership (Andrea Grover, Amy Kirwin, Kristin Eberstadt, Melanie Crader, Jeannine Dyner, Jennifer Brondo); Lana Jokel, filmmaker; Marit Molin of Hamptons Community Outreach; Barbara Moss, League of Women Voters and founder of the Women’s Film Preservation Fund; Minerva Perez of the Organización Latino-Americana (OLA); Toni Ross (support of Planned Parenthood, criminal justice and prison reform); and the VOTE Initiative (Louise Eastman, Erica-Lynn Huberty, Laurie Lambrecht, and fellow female artists of the East End). Then, raise another glass as we pass the mic to our honorees, who will pay it forward by shouting out their own honoree. Respect. The gift that keeps on giving.
The International Women’s Day theme for 2025 is #AccelerateAction, illuminating ways in which we can move more boldly toward gender equity. What better way to highlight women’s walk toward equity than to spotlight and celebrate women who embody accelerated action in our community, holding effective positions of leadership, choosing to be powerful advocates for those in need and those at risk, and ensuring the arts continue to flourish and inspire? Join us as we celebrate their achievements with movement, celebration, and the joy of community. Let’s dance!
A special thank you to Sagaponack Distillery for its generous donation of libations for the evening. And a warm wave of gratitude to our musical magician, DJ Henry Eau, who, standing in solidarity will wield tunes and grooves to keep us on our feet all night long.

Drawing Salon - Sam Messer Style with Jackie Hoving and Norm Paris
Jackie Hoving and Norm Paris invite you to a drawing salon in the style of Sam Messer’s “drawing happenings.” Having met during their time as Sam’s students in the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art program, Messer has passed his torch to the couple in the spirit of community. Bring a sketchbook, graphite or colored pencils, and/or pens (please no paints, charcoal, or pastels), and have a seat in the main gallery space to draw the people around you, the space, or something that catches your eye in this meditative experience of observing.
In the style of Sam Messer’s famous drawing happenings, the event is a laid-back environment where the most difficult task is losing yourself to the act of drawing and remaining present. Both Jackie and Norm honor the legacy of Sam’s happenings and his belief in community, bringing people together through drawing. “We are together and alone at the same time,” says Norm.
Please note that this is a casual drawing session and not a class.

WORD: Connection
WORD, the program that celebrates the written word as an art form and challenges writers to share works that resonate with an anchoring theme, returns for its fourth iteration, WORD: Connection. WORD brings together writers, storytellers, and performers for an evening of presence, performance, and reflection. In this iteration the curated writers have been asked to respond to the query: how do we make connections?
In an evening curated by writer and editor, Drew Zeiba, the notable writers Hanna Baer, Tom House, Angie Sijun Lou, and Nora Treatbaby, will focus on contemplations of the query, examining the how, what, and why of connection and connectivity, diving deep into the theme and its permutations and insinuations. A program co-created by former Programming Manager Talena Mascali, WORD honors the legacy of Sag Harbor as a welcoming home for artists, writers, and creatives while celebrating the power and range of the written and spoken word.
The reading will offer café table seating (limited tables available that seat four guests), and regular seating behind, with some treats served and others available for purchase.

INSIGHT SUNDAY with MILA TINA
Mila Tina invites you to get in touch with your intrinsic fabric of feminine energy and existence and explore the multidimensionality of your identity through the lens of her creative expression.
For this month’s Insight Sunday, the interdisciplinary artist will present her short film Mujer Luna and guide a dynamic exploration of its themes. Well-known throughout the East End as a musician and drummer, and for her rhythm and movement workshops, Mila Tina in Mujer Luna expands upon the inspiration at the root of all her work: the legendary women and archetypes of femininity that reside within all people. The presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A.
Mujer Luna, translating to “moon woman,” is a gentle nod to the Moon as a symbol of feminine identity. Mila Tina’s work is an expression of liberated emotions, a catalyst for transformation, and an exploration of the grounds that connect us deeply to ourselves and to others. Join us as we learn about this beautiful project that is the epicenter of her multifaceted artistic practice and vision.
